Welcome New Scouts!
The first thing you need to do is read through your rank handbook. It will explain thoroughly how Cub Scouts is designed and how the program works. Generally speaking, we have monthly den meetings for the boys in each grade and then a monthly pack meeting with all boys in grades 1-5.
The Bobcat badge is the first step in Cub Scouts. The 8 requirements to earn this badge include learning about the scout oath and the scout law, the motto, the handshake, the salute, etc. NO MEMORIZATION REQUIRED just yet. The object of these requirements is for the boy and his parents to understand the goals and ideals of the program. After all 8 have been completed, the scout is eligible to receive his Bobcat badge. Each family should create an account on www.scouttrack.com to record these advancements in order for the boy to receive his badge.
Not every boy will be a badge-seeking, handbook-highlighting Scout. Some may be busy athletes outside of school. Some may just want to camp out a few times and go to the farm, a hockey game, maybe a pack meeting or two. That’s fine. We will meet you where you are. A boy's life should feel enhanced by Scouts, not restricted by it.
To earn a rank by the June deadline, boys must complete seven adventures (six required and one elective). Requirements that must be completed at home include a short faith-based project, as well as a few exercises in chores, nutrition, and fitness. Most other requirements will be completed in our den meetings. We may also practice for pack activities such as flag ceremonies and campfire programs.
For each adventure completed, the scout will earn a belt loop for his scout belt. The boys will be recognized at pack meetings for their efforts, and hopefully be encouraged by this scout version of swag. Again, we will not know about his advancements if it is not entered into www.scouttrack.com. Anyone with technical aversions can make other arrangements with me, but the digital records changed the game for everyone. I highly encourage it. I’m actually tinkering with new, better software but it’s not available to all yet.
